Grant you that, but at some point you have to consider pitch bend.  If
you ever want to
receive MIDI pitch wheel messages, you're going to need a wider DAC for
that anyway.
Maybe for a sequencer that's not a consideration.  But if you do have to
process
pitch bend, it makes more sense to me to just use a wider DAC to begin
with and
do pitch bend and portamento in the digital domain.
