Back when I used wire wrap (not saying that there's anything wrong with
it--I just prefer other techniques nowadays), I'd put a sheet of plain paper
flat against the underside of the perfboard and then push the pins of the
sockets through it. This requires pushing just hard enough to pierce the
paper, but not hard enough to pierce the fingertip that you use to hold the
paper in place. Once you've pushed the sockets through, use a fine-tip
marker or mechanical pencil to write pin numbers, part numbers, whatever on
the paper. It's much cheaper than those little plastic things and gives you
more room to write.
