Here's the deal with "zee": Noah Webster stated uncategorically in his
authoritative dictionary of 1828 that the letter Z was pronounced "zee" and
thus set this peculiarly American tradition in stone.  His reasons were very
simple: the "Alphabet song" (you know, the one set to Mozart's "Twinkle
Twinkle Little Star" theme) only rhymes if Z is pronounced "zee".
Therefore, for the sake of all those little American children learning their
ABCs, "zee" it had to be!

True story.
