I recently visited the Nevada Historical Society Museum in Reno, and there
on display was a telephone switchboard from about 1910 which was covered
with patch cords which, I'm sure, would work just fine on my MOTM-format
synth. Of course, the advantages of 1/4" plugs are that they are easy to
grab, easy to find the jack with, and very durable -- all critical for
telephony, and highly desirable for synths.
