The basic idea is sound, I'd just replace the conductive tape with 
brass wires and the thumbtacks with brass tubing or normal TS jacks of 
appropriate size.  The plugs should "brush" the wire when plugged 
through the hole.  I think the results would be much more consistent 
and if you later find that simply shorting wires isn't really getting 
the results you want it is easy to put some resistors in the plugs to 
get mixing patch matrix.
