You should try out your idea. See how far you can take it. 

A notion I had a while back: take those little pushbutton switches (Mouser 612-TL1108AF250), they're $0.09 IN 100s, and make a matrix of them. Use cribbage pins in a board full of holes above the switches to actuate.
