I don't do a lot of this, but I generally use a DMM which has a
continuity test beep (so I can concentrate on where the probes are,
rather than periodically looking at the display).

If it beeps when I'm not expecting, I swap the two ends (in case there's
a diode or similar in the way). If it still beeps, it's time to
investigate some more.

If there's a short beep, then there's a capacitor across the two probes.
