If you don't multiplex them yes they do need more pins on the micro.

There's lots of things that could be added, for the moment I'm  
focusing on getting the bootloader working so you can update the  
firmware via midi sysex.

 From there the options are almost limitless, but I don't want to  
spend a lifetime adding and tweaking lots of features. I think it's  
fairly complete now, that said, the code will be available so you can  
always add your own modifications :-)
