You should be on the right track. Try making R106 bigger too.

For the best signal to noise ratio you should be setting the gain to  
as high as possible without clipping. The overload indicator WAS  
helping you identify where that point is. If you are not getting the  
signal up to solid line level, then it will never light the LED.
