It might be worth having a hunt through Microchip Application Notes. 
I've never [worked|played] with Microchip products but have dabbled with 
Dallas high-speed 8052s and Freescale HC08s as well as the Atmel AVRs 
which are my main focus (more for the toolchain than anything.)

All three of these manufacturers give sufficient details for one to be 
able to build a programmer for the devices in question - the Freescale 
and Dallas App Notes/datasheets even have schematics.

I would guess, therefore, that Microchip would have something similar 
documented.
