True enough. I run MPLAB on WinXP under VMWare Fusion on my Macbook. 
Works just fine, and Fusion is pretty inexpensive. A legal copy of WinXP 
was actually the limiting factor in this setup for me.

You still need some sort of download hardware though. Since I use an 
MCHP ICD2 I don't know what the alternatives are.
