1) Diversity.

2) There is the satisfaction of creating something that is one's own 
work rather than just a copy of another's work.

3) I feel that there is far too much of a bias towards PIC devices (and 
thus one manufacturer) in the DIY market.  Something done with Arduino 
chalks up another point for Atmel AVR.

4) I'm sure that I had another point but can't remember it ;-)  Time for 
a cup of tea.
