[sdiy] first oscilloscope help

One thing I have found is that even though signals I observe may never have
a frequency more than 20Mhz or so a fast scope is very good if you want to
look at the shape of edges particularly in digital circuits. I recently
developed an auto-tune system for a VCO and had all manner of problems
measuring the frequency until I carefully observed the switching edges on a
fast scope. Instantly I saw the problem with multiple triggering and was
able to rectify it. Others may disagree but I'd go for the fastest scope
you can afford and if it's s/h make sure it comes with probes rated at the
frequency of the machine, if not you'll need to buy 'em and 500MHz probes
aren't cheap! G

Great suggestions Peter, Samppa and David that might help Jovius. I'm
on the look out for something for my Mac though either sound input
based or USB. If anyone has anything, I'd like to take a look but this
isn't a priority for me at the moment.

Hey Veronica,
If you're on a Mac (I think there's also a PC/VST version) - and have
something that can host an AU plug in - I've been using this for years:

It's no replacement for a 'real' scope - but it's free, lightweight and
reliable.
HTH.
