There's at least one thousand scoping and metering vst plugins.
Some good ones:
S(m)exoscope http://bram.smartelectronix.com/scope_docs/
Fre(a)koscope http://mdsp.smartelectronix.com/ffttools/2005/03/freakoscope-08-public-beta.php
Sonogram SG-1 (windows only) http://ag-works.net/plugins.sg1.htm
They work in at least another 1 million free VST hosts.
I'm not sure what works on mac, so I'm not going to recommend anything
in that regard.
All of those things can work very well with audio inputs.
