Do you really need encoders (potentiometer like) as you want to change the values quite often or may
"thumb wheel switches" be a solution? There are type with hexadecimal output.

I think it came up because the hex encoders the original poster saw were
$80 each.
And to be honest, none of my regular suppliers sell hex encoders.
