Excuse my ignorance, but how is this brilliant? Using an obsolete
expensive part in place of a microcontroller that costs less than a 10th
as much seems absurd. It's one thing when DIY focused sites use
discrete logic as their target market doesn't typically have the ability
to program a microcontroller. If there is already a microcontroller
used in the project or it's a commercial project a port expander or
second microcontroller makes more sense.
