LFO's also output positive/negative signals. If you want to modulate the 
gain of a VCA using an LFO or a VCO you need to reduce the signal and 
add an offset voltage. While VCO's and VCF's generally provide panel 
controls to do this (the main pitch or cutoff knob, and a modulation 
intensity knob) most VCA's don't.

So to use such a VCA with an LFO or VCO for 
tremolo/panning/ringmodulator effects you would need some kind of 
control voltage processor such as http://www.buchla.com/200e/256e.html 
(or a much simpler one)
