Why not follow the example of the manufacturers of small mixers - 
provide both.  I know we're talking different types of signal here but 
the same principle could applied.

For example, I have a little Soundcraft mixer here that has both 
balanced (on 1/4" jacks) and unbalanced (on RCA phono) connections.

Unless you're integrating your work into a very specific, bespoke rig, 
why not go for flexibility?
