In my case, one plus for Eagle was that it has a Mac OS native version.

You might go for the geda tools, which I have heard good things about.  
For reasons I don't remember now, had trouble getting them to run on  
my Mac, which is why I didn't pursue them and went for Eagle, but a  
few more days effort into it probably would have gotten them going.
