Not sure why knobs are so pricey but a lot of it has to do with the 
number of participants involved in getting them to market and they 
all want a cut.

Asian Factory makes knobs while paying workers $0.06 an hour
Total cost for knob is next to nothing.
Factory owner probably drives a Mercedes.
Sells to US distributor like Tyco for $.030 each

Tyco sells to Distributor like Mouser for probably $1.00 each

Mouser sells for $2.50-4.00 depending on knob

These are just rough estimates but probably not far off.

I saw a documentary recently that showed a jean factory in China.
Total cost for one pair of jeans was $1.
This company made jeans for Levi which are what? $70 a pair in Canada
