If it's actually physically damaged,  the display itself might be the problem.  
Or if it has an open filament,  but I don't think I've run across one of 
those yet.  More likely it's missing some power supply voltage that's used by 
only the display and nothing else,  I'd look for that...

My researches seem to indicate that very few of these were off-the-shelf 
items,  most of them being very application-specific and custom made.  I 
don't know for a fact that this is the case with the unit you refer to there,  
just that this is how it's seemed to me so far.
