A sustaining sound, often with a soft-ish attack/release, typically
played polyphonically and used for backing chords, or to "pad out" the
overall mix of instruments.

In my experience as a sound engineer, as well as the sound of several
detuned oscillators in unison, people often also refer to "fat" or
"Phat" meaning that the sound has a "warm" or rounded bass end, with a
pleasant LF response.
Thus a single oscillator Bass line could be Fat, but *not* if it didn't
have a good bass end, or was "thin" sounding.
The phrase "Nice Fat bottom end" can refer to a synth patch, the
characteristics of an equalizer or amp, or be a comment on a drum
sound.
Fat *doesn't* exactly equal strong bass, but there is definitely a link
there.
my 2 pence worth ;-)
