[sdiy] DIY modules.. where to start?

Over the past few months I have been designing and prototyping simple modules with these design goals: simple and easy to build on stripboard (because its more easily modifiable), understandable for those learning basic electronics (suitable for an educational context), common and cheap parts, avoiding static sensitive stuff if possible (the ruggeder the better), able to run on batteries (+/-9V). Most of the modules consist of a single LM324 on a couple of square inches of stripboard. And finally they must work well enough so that they can be musically useful in non-critical applications (go-use-digital-if-you-want-sample-accurate-repeatability ;-).

A group of us are building these battery powered analog synths with a view to street performance. Along the way I am teaching them about audio electronics. In a couple of weeks will be our first major outing - about eight of us taking our modulars out and improvising some noise for the passers by. Wish us luck.

The synths are based around +/-9V supplies, 0-5V CV, +/-1V audio, V/Hz pitch control. That is not quite the same as most modulars, but is better suited to battery power and intermingling with stompbox effects.

If you wanted to use any of my designs in a standard modular context you might need to tweak a few things because of the voltage level differences, but that's all part of the fun, right ;-)

At the moment my ADSR is getting contemplated by a few people over on electro-music.com and I could post more stuff over there if anyone was interested. Bearing in mind that my designs are relatively fresh and may still have a few niggles here and there. Best suited to people who are interested in understanding how things work and happy to tweak them to get them working just how they want.

Cheers,
Nicolas

against my own better judgement [and time management] I want to start building a few of my own modules.

I don't want to build from kits, I am determined to figure out schematics.
I want to start with some simple but still useful things like filters, like the Moog diode ladder filter, etc.

What would you recommend as the best place to start? They're going to live inside a not so populated Frac rack.
Hence, my request to build modules for it.

Thanks in advance,

+odd
