My recommendation: As a Starter with diy the big difficulties will be 
mechanics and not electronics. So start with something, that will not 
cause electronic problems for sure: a mixer.

Once you will have mastered the first hurdles in mechanical module 
design, you may go on with modules that also provide electronical 
challenges.

Regarding the sites, I also recommend CGS and MusicFromOuterSpace.
