Hey Todd,
You're saying that you don't want to build on pre made PCBs right?
and you're gonna source all your own parts..?
Most kit sites also include the schematics and detailed build
instructions. eg. MusicFromOuterSpace and CGS.
I HIGHLY recommend that you start with these sites, especially MFOS
for the super detailed instructions. You can build the circuits from
the schematics and then if something goes wrong, you have a ton of
supporting info to refer to. ALSO there are really strong builder
communities for both of these sites so you'll be able to get lots of
input if needed.
Once you've built a few of those you can move on to the more obscure
circuits that may be amazing but aren't as well documented. Tellun
(www.tellun.com) designs some really cool stuff.
Yusynth is good too. These guys both have good, well documented
circuits.
