Important word there: "check".

A volt meter is a cheap thing that could save your life.  If you ever 
have a question about what voltages are present - check them!   It's 
easy to put a volt meter from the strings of a guitar to the mike, or 
from an amp input to ground, and see if there's 120VAC there.  Likewise, 
if you're circuit bending and connecting unknown point X to unknown 
point Y and/or hooking up to an unknown amp/PA/whatever check with your 
meter before connecting.   Nothing wrong with being a little paranoid!
