I'm guessing this is because of the combination of SMD only packaging and
limited features (little ram and only 128 instructions per sample).

I'm curious. What algorithm was this?

I've been planning a dspic based fx module and preliminary notepad coding
suggests that a single dspic could well do phaser, chorus, delay & reverb
all at once (in stereo).
