There are an endless array of materials available that can be etched
with lasers to create nameplates, trophy plaques,
signage etc. There are many pre anodized or coated sheet stock metals
available that can be "burned" off to resemble the effect with the
laser powder coating mentioned
as well as transparent liquids that can be applied to bare steel
which when heated with a laser turn black. This is how markings are
created on Drill bits
and endmills etc. Very durable and very fine printing is possible.
There is a whole industry around laser etching machines for material
supply of these king of marking materials.
