Hmm. I'm a cold slimey slug, I still use the 2N3904...
For me, selecting a favorite part requires knowing the application. But I use 2N3904 for
general audio amplification and for switching such as for LEDs or even plate circuit relays.
I use enough 2N3904 that I order them 100 at a time.
