OT Re: [sdiy] Bob Moog - Mini pulse widths

I remember it was about glitches in the waveform from the core of the
oscillators somehow related to limitations of the power supply.

I've listened to many, many recordings using the Minimoog and lusted
for one since childhood. I thought that other synths allow detuning of
oscillators, sound Moogish, so why spring for a Mini? Well, I recently
took the plunge and got one with the old oscillators. I have to
acknowledge that there is something magical here. I think part of it
has to do with the pulse waveforms and how the higher harmonic contents
phase against each other when the oscillators beat. Other synths I've
played don't have as much of this going on even with the filter wide
open. I don't know if it's the glitch waveform thing or whatever, but
it is real and I can hear it plain as day. Also, I now know that many
recordings I've heard do not fully capture the breadth of the sound.

Does anyone remember..was it Kevin or who that did a bit of research a
while back and found that part of the charm of the mini is that it has
somewhat sporratic pulse widths. And apparently at an intermittency
that gives the sonically interesting dynamic timbre the pulse waves.
They had analyzed
why it did that too and it's been to long. I should
have that information posted on my site....what did I do with the old
emails..I just looked and can't find them...Harry? Tom? Anyone
remember? -Bob
