[sdiy] Are there technical reasons that people use 1/8" jacks?

Even worse, the closest thing to a "historical" 1/8" jack is the  
Switchcraft Tini-Jax series, as used on Arp, Buchla, and many others,  
which is .141" or 3.5814 mm
