[sdiy] Are there technical reasons that people use 1/8" jacks?

Basically - NO,
They are only a space saving issue on Frac / Euro size panels.
And I know it's hard for you imperial American types but there is
no such thing as a 1/8" jack, they are 3.5mm (He said ducking !!).
