[sdiy] question about cables

I want to order cables for my sdiy projects, could you guys give me some 
advice about what I'll certainly be needing ?

- diameter (conductor area)
- insulator colors (whas thinking black, white, red, yellow)
- conductor material : copper, silver plated or tinned copper ?

Shouldn't I also take one single wire within the insulator instead of 
all those fine/bundled ones ?
