Ha ha, I know what you mean!
Same experience here, since I have a Goldring G1042 on a decent Pro-Ject turntable. :)
But first I had to throw away those "High End" phono cables, which actually hat too much capacitance for that system, and totally 
ruined the sound by creating a resonance peak around 12kHz :)
