[sdiy] Micro as a Linear to Exponential converter?

Hey all,

Forgive me if this topic has already been covered or if it's ridiculous idea.

Has anyone done linear to exponential conversion at code/script/sketch level on a micro?

i.e. scaling - say MIDI Pitch info - on chip, to an Exponential CV output (via a dedicated DAC), instead of outputting a linear CV and then using one of the traditional discrete Lin to Exp conversion methods.

Possible? Incredibly difficult? Stupid?

I should clarify that I'm asking this from the POV of someone who has never programmed a micro or built a Lin to Exp converter - so be gentle ;)
