[sdiy] My Fancy Paperweight, the ESQ

A while back I asked the list here about servicing an Ensoniq ESQ-1.

It was suggested that given my problems with it (after replacing the memory battery, it still stays stuck on a screen telling the make, model, and OS)(MIDI doesn't work either btw), there was liable to be some something wrong with one of the logic ICs.

Well, how ought I go about testing that sort of thing? Just a logic probe and datasheet handy for each chip, or need I so much as a logic comparator? There's one on eBay now for $40 shipped, though I wonder if it would be that worthwhile an investment. I already paid that much for the ESQ alone (though if that'll get it to work...).

If a probe is enough, and precautions and things to bear in mind there?
