Getting increasingly off topic, I can't help but think of this (not exactly Steely Dan...):

Getting back on topic, I'm sure glad we've found ways to effectively eliminate tuning drift (or if need be, reintroduce it in a controlled fashion).
To that point, David, you might try having a look at what JH has done with his Living VCO, such that you could use modern components to make a stable design, with the option to add some of that old school drifting sound.
