[sdiy] Good quality panel switches?

How are those lever style switches made that are found e.g. in DJ
mixers? They have a fairly thick shaft and a very solid mechanical
operation. Is that going to be a separate mechanical assembly that
goes on top of a standard part, or do they actually create their own
complete switch with a thick shaft like that?

An example is the input selection switch on the Pioneer DJM600:

(on a side note, I love those switches for quickly cutting out sound..
works especially well for electro style tracks)
