[sdiy] Which programable chip?

I'm fairly new to microcontrollers and programmable logic. I'm actually studying Verilog right now and it looks fairly straightforward. I can see how to do the program in C++ but I know that's not the same as or necessarily close to VHDL. I guess I'm kinda overwhelmed by the number of chips available.
