oh ok so yes if it can only do ascii characters, but presumably with 
a user-definable character set for doing the graphicky stuff, then 
you'd have to set up that to be rotated as well. and all the other 
things that might come up. doable, but way more hassle than it's 
worth.

unless Tom is ultimately successful with his hack, i think i might 
get an Arduino graphic shield or something and have a play with that. 
writing a scope sounds interesting.
