Because I want to.  For me, that's the whole point in DIY - I see a
need, I work through a design process, I learn along the way and then I
arrive at something that is my own work.

For me, the creative process of making music (or weird noises) starts
with making the instrument.  I'm more a guitarist than keyboard player,
but a) my woodworking skills are best left undiscussed and b) of all the
instruments I can realise myself (can't play an entire string section on
my own,) synthesisers are my favourite.  I am able to build a
synthesiser, but that's not on my short-term list; building a control
system for the hardware I have is.
