Tom > I find poking at things with a mouse pointer rather unsatisfying...

Oddly enough, I love mousing. It gives me total control because I very
rarely want to control that many things in real time. Note number, note
on/off, velocity, pitch bend and aftertouch are the only things I
normally need to be be freely controlled in real time. Everything else I
am very happy tweaking by mouse.

I love the fact that all mouse movements can be stored and then tweaked
again and again. I also love the fact that those very movements can then
be undone again and again. Or copied, or translated to other parameters,
or even used in other projects.

I used to have to do all this via CCs and midi. Now VSTi gives me the
chance to do this all in the host DAW. Audio loops and drones are
captured and then tweaked in the production stage. I hardly ever vary
anything during any audio recording itself.

I'd do everything in the digital domain if it sounded as good as real
analogue.

For me, the UI of the actual synth is way less important than the
tweakability and parameter recall. My favourite VSTi is VAZ modular, but
the UI of an open system like that is not one of its strong points.

Is it no wonder it takes me two and half years to knock up 60 minutes of
music? :-)

Seb > Does anyone consider instant patch recall a useful component of UI?

I'd like have patch recall on the whole studio. I can almost do that
now. The benefit of this is that one can work on one piece and then move
onto the next, but still having the chance to go back to the previous
piece without having to go through notes or try to remember where
everything was.

But everyone is different, we all like different things and we all work
in very different ways. At least we now have the choice.
