Yep. A *good* 40-band vocoder is going to be very, very expensive in  
hardware. You can bodge a cheap one with basic filters, but it will  
sound sloppy and not very interesting.

Software is great for this because you can prototype the results and  
decide if the thing is worth building. (For something like this, the  
answer would usually be 'no.')
