Uh - wait a minute - it depends on what those various poles are doing.
If you're talking about a straight lowpass, sure, you won't notice
much of a difference beyond 4 poles. But if you're setting up specific
resonances, bring on those poles!
Also, make sure you're making a distinction between cascading filters
and adding the outputs of individual filters. A filterbank adds the
outputs of the specific filter. The 4-poles referred to above are in
cascade. Apples and oranges.
