Then I would connect two 1 kilo-ohm resistors at the output of the VCA
(instead of the one that is normally provided, R310 or R360) and wire
one to the tip and the other to the ring tab.
This way, when you connect a stereo plug, the same signal is present on
the ring and on the tip. When you connect a mono plug, the ring will
short one of the resistors to ground, but the opamp U301 or U351 should
be able to drive the 1 kilo-ohm load and the signal will still be
present on the tip. If you would just connect the tip and ring tabs
together you would not have signal if you connected a mono plug.
