[sdiy] stereo output questions.....

What does the proposed stereo output connect to?
If it's a single VCA, then it'll be a mono source, and there would be
no point running the same dual mono signal down 2 output cables,
(whether balanced or unbalanced)
When it gets to the other end it would still be a mono signal.
If you use 2 VCAs in the output stage, one for each side of the stereo,
then you can have a true stereo output.
(of course it depends on what's fed to those 2 VCAs, whether it be 2
different audio sources, one to each VCA audio input, *or*, the same
audio signal to both, but with differing CVs to each VCA (which would
give a panned mono signal, with the pan position dependent on how
different the CVs were)
IIRC, you're working on an ASM 2?, which has a pair of VCAs specd on
the Elby site......
FWIW, I've always preferred 2 separate Left/right sockets for a stereo
output, as in the studio or live, most mixer/amp/what-have-you inputs
are set up for either a balanced or unbalanced mono signal down a
single cable. Finding an adaptor cable ("Y" splitter) can be a pain
during the throes of creativity...... ;-)
Of course, if space is severely limited, then a single stereo jack can
be a good compromise, but it does rule out the option of balanced
outputs.
Apologies if you've already thought of this, but as it hasn't been
mentioned so far in the thread, I thought I'd throw it in..... :-)
cheers,
Dave
