[sdiy] IC sockets or not???

Personally I don't use sockets in my projects, but then I'm also choosing
SMT parts over through-hole parts when I can.

Someone once told me that it was silly to use a socket that cost more than
the chip it will hold, which made some amount of sense. 

If you do use sockets, stick with the good ones (as you said you intended to
do). I recently repaired a perplexing problem on an old Lexicon delay;
eventually I traced the problem to a bent contact in a cheap socket.
