that's the way i do it. i use two nuts (M7).

BTW i am using the 16mm alphas and i never have experienced any problems 
with soldering the wire to the holes instead to the pins. could someone 
explain whats wrong with this?

dan, i don't cut off the pins to get more pots in a column, i just mount 
them 30^ rotated like this:
