I'd look for a surplus Power-One (or similar) Linear power supply.
They are quiet and reasonably cheap. (except they are heavy and shipping
could be costly.

Computer power supplies are not usually good because

* they require a minimum load on the main (5V) output which a synth
does not need. Could be tens to hundreds of watts of wasted power
(thermal drift anyone ????)

* they have poor output capacity on the negative voltages that most synths
need

* they are electrically noisy and VERY hard to filter out that noise. It gets
into everything !

* They often need fan cooling

DIY for a power supply is usually not the best idea, you need to buy a
transformer anyway, and some chassis etc. You could probably not save any
money. Choosing the right transformer is tough for small supplies... people
like Power One have worked out the bugs for you...
