I understand you fully. Muting a lot of channels can be quite expensive.
Years ago I designed a 48 channel mute circuit for a studio that used BSS198 FETs
as muting devices. If I remeber correctly we controlled the 48 Gates via two
82C55 port extenders and a simple RC combinatin for smothing the edges.
We added the muting FETs directly in the mixer - I think after the Fader.
Worked perfectly.
